The prognosis, therapy (including types of chemotherapy) and treatment choices are similar whether the cancer is pleural mesothelioma or peritoneal mesothelioma. It would suggest that mesothelioma prognosis and survival may be more dependent on individual differences among patients. For many asbestosis patients the mesothelioma prognosis may be hopeful. Mesothelioma prognosis and mesothelioma treatment options depend on the size of the tumor, the stage of cancer, potential surgical removal of any tumor, and the amount of fluid in the chest or abdomen.
