Prognostic factors for malignant mesothelioma

Treatment options depend on the which stage the cancer has progressed to. Unfortunately, mesothelioma often is not diagnosed until the cancer is in the late stages of development. Along with the TNM stage of the patient's mesothelioma, there are additional prognostic factors that determine the mesothelioma survival rate.

The incidence of malignant mesothelioma is increasing. There is the perception that survival is worse in the UK than in other countries. For many asbestosis patients the mesothelioma prognosis is maybe hopeful. Study indicate the epithelial cell type have been associated more often with a favorable prognosis. Mesothelioma is usually diagnosed by x-ray. A common sign associated with mesothelioma infection is what is called a pleural effusion. Pleural effusions are areas inside the lungs where fluid has built up in the lining of the lungs and settles to one place.
